Silicone Spatulas



Silicone Spatulas are the perfect addition to any kitchen. With the popularity of silicone bake ware and utensils, they have become a staple on most cooking shows.

They seem like a fairly straight forward little utensil, until you start to see all of the varieties out there.

I have a few of these variations in my own kitchen and some have worked amazingly and some I wished I had not wasted my money.

So let’s talk spatulas.


If you are just getting started with silicone spatulas, I would highly recommend buying a nice set to start with. You will find that larger spatulas will be great for thick batters. The medium are perfect for everyday use, and the smallest are wonderful for scraping the last remnants of food from small jars.

Best Buys

The set to the left, I found at cooking.com. They are perfectly priced, stain resistant and have a high temperature resistance (600 degrees), so they will not melt when you use them with boiling mixtures.

The handle is built into the spatula, so it will not fall out after a few washes.





Kitchenaid also makes a great set. They perfectly complement their popular stand mixers and are reasonably priced. I personally own these spatulas and have had none of the typical problems.


Firstly, the longest handles are best, especially on the smallest spatulas. This will keep you from getting your hands dirty. I love scraping every last bit of peanut butter or nutella from the jar with out getting an ounce anywhere but the bowl.

On some of my larger spatulas, I prefer rounded edges which slide easily around a mixing bowl. The better they slide around the bowl, the less I have to clean!



What to Avoid

  • Wooden handles
    • You will certainly want your spatula to be dishwasher safe, so if you purchase a spatula with a wooden handle, the wood might swell when exposed to water. This happened to my orange kitchenaid spatula, after only a few months. I was lucky I did not pay much for him.

  • Metal handles
    • What is the point in having a heat resistant silicone spatula if the metal handle will burn you if left near a boiling pot? I often wonder about the purpose of these types of silicone spatulas.

  • Small handles
    • The small handle cause hand cramp because it will require you to put more into mixing. These types are only useful if you have bowls that are really small, otherwise you get frosting knuckles.
