Pie Shields
Why do I need this?Pie Shields are a wonderful, wonderful tool. You see, when you put a pie in the oven, it is a good idea to cover your crust on the edges, because they cook much faster than the rest of the pie and will burn.
If you are without this tool, you usually use foil. You roll out the foil, cut strips and try to clamp it around the edges only without ruining your creative design.
Once you get one side clamped down, and start to work your way around the pie, the original pieces start coming off. It is a very frustrating process.
Now, I have mentioned before, but I am a sucker for anything silicone. When I found that they make pie shields in silicone, I was instantly sold.
Silicone is easy to clean, doesn’t stain, flexible and usually very heat resistant. When I pull my pie out of the oven, it will not sear my skin. William Bounds Sili Gourmet Reusable Silicone Pie Crust Protector, Red ($7.99 at Amazon).
I find them frustrating and flimsy. Most of these products claim that you can throw them in the dishwasher, however when you they will become warped.
However, these types are not the easiest to find, and the most common type is the metal. I would steer away from the separate piece metal pie shields. They are like working with regular tin foil.I find them frustrating and flimsy. Most of these products claim that you can throw them in the dishwasher, however when you they will become warped. But, they are great in a crunch and if you are looking for something for less than $2 to keep around the house for emergencies, Amazon has Pie Crust Shield pieces . These are the perfect alternative to the silicone pie shields. You won't need more than one, as this one fits both 9 and 10 inch pies. The shield is really light, so it will not ruin your fancy pie fluting and decorating! (Mrs. Anderson's 10.75-in. Pie Crust Shield available at cooking.com for $4.95)
