November 7, 2008 - - Williams-Sonoma pie

Williams-Sonoma sent out an email recently getting us ready for Thanksgiving.
How amazing does this pie look?
This beautiful apple pie is made with their handy leaf and acorn cookie cutters and a beautiful caramel colored pie plate, like the one below. Let's talk about recreating this masterpiece.
Now that we are in a baking mood- how can we best prepare this? I know that Amazon.com always has a few alternatives that might be a little better on the pocket book. Try the Wilton Leaves/Acorns Cookie Cutters for only $6.29.
Williams- Sonoma also offers this beautiful Artisan Ruffled Pie Dish in Caramel ideal for baking deep-dish fruit and savory pies that you can serve right at the table. Usually pie plates with hand-applied glaze won't scratch or craze, you can use sharp utensils for slicing a pie. Available at Williams-Sonoma via Amazon.com .
If this is a little too much, I did a break down of beautiful pie plate alternatives:
November 1, 2008 - - Paula Deen's New Cookware!
Calm down, pielettes! I know, just in time for the holidays, Amazon.com and Cooking.com has picked up Paula Deen's new cookware.
My personal favorite (no surprise) is the pie plate. How perfect would this pie plate fit a delicious pecan pie?
Let's take a look:

October 28, 2008 - - Harvest Pie Plate with Travel Cover!
I absolutely gasped the first time I saw this Harvest-Themed Pie Dish by Mikasa. This 2 piece pie dish is hand painted and made of glazed ceramic. The pumpkin-shaped lid (which is beyond perfect for traveling holiday party pies) has a handle made of a leaf.
Mikasa also has a matching set of Italian Countryside-themed dishes, including gourds, pumpkins and leaves. It is very harvest indeed!

October 10, 2008 - - Buy a Halloween Treat
For those who are not big into cooking, or have found themselves just too busy, Amazon is a great resource for delicious ready to eat pies and treats. Here are a list of a few fall favorites:

Try something untraditional with a harvest twist. This Pumpkin Cheesecake is an unexpected party treat.

I know it looks like pumpkin pie, but this Pumpkin Pie Fudge is another unexpected traditional twist on a delicious treat.

October 6, 2008 - - Spooky Halloween Centerpiece
The perfect Halloween party accessory! Cut your pie with one of these knives. I laughed so hard when I saw this little guy on Amazon. One of the more unique Halloween Knife Holders I have ever seen. The company who makes this insists this is supposed to be an "ex" and makes products similar to this, but I think it could double as spooky Halloween decor.

October 4, 2008 - - Jack O'Lantern Tartlets
These Jack o' Lantern Tartlets are ideal for entertaining or a sweet weekend treat.
Makes 1 dozen
- All-purpose flour, for work surface
- Tart Dough
- 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 1/2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 2 large egg yolks, lightly beaten
- 1 to 4 tablespoons ice water
- 1 can (15 ounces) solid-packed pumpkin
- 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons heavy cream
- 3 large eggs plus 1 large egg yolk
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/4 cup packed light-brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon coarse salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- Combine flour, sugar, and salt in a food processor. Add butter, and pulse until mixture resembles coarse meal.
- With machine running, add yolks in a slow, steady stream. Add water, a little at a time, until dough just comes together.
- Divide dough in thirds; shape into disks. Wrap each in plastic, and refrigerate at least 2 hours (up to 2 days).
- Place one disk of dough on a lightly floured work surface; roll out to 1/8 inch thick. Cut out six 6-inch rounds, gathering scraps and rerolling dough once if needed. Fit rounds into six 3 3/4-inch fluted tart pans with removable bottoms.
- Trim dough flush with tops. Refrigerate on baking sheets 30 minutes. Repeat with second disk of dough.
- Roll out remaining dough to 1/8 inch thick. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Refrigerate 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Whisk pumpkin, 1 cup cream, whole eggs, honey, sugar, salt, and spices in a large bowl.
- Divide among tart shells. Bake tarts on baking sheets until edges are golden brown and filling has set, about 30 minutes. Let cool on wire racks. Keep oven on.
- Using a paring knife, cut out jack-o-lantern features from the chilled dough; transfer cutouts to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Chill in freezer 15 minutes. Whisk yolk and remaining 2 tablespoons cream in a small bowl. Brush cutouts with the egg wash. Bake until golden brown, about 9 minutes. Let cool completely on a wire rack. Arrange cutouts on top of cooled tarts, and serve.
