Do decorative pie plates make pies taste better?

Decorative Pie Plates vs Plain Experiment

Recently, I conducted a little experiment at a work potluck. I decided to double one of my best apple pie recipes in order to try something new.

Now, this is no ordinary recipe. This one doubles the cinnamon, increased sugar and a glaze of melted butter and egg. This is a no-holds-barred kind of pie. But I did something uniquely different to each one. I put one in a plain glass pie plate and another in a really ornate and beautiful pie plate.

This beautiful pie plate is one of my personal favorite decorative pie plates, so I was happy to use it in this experiment. When I got to the potluck, I placed the pies at opposite ends of the conference table, then sat and watched.

But, the effects of my experiment lasted throughout the day. My coworkers came up to me and told me how delicious the pie was. I graciously said my thanks and slyly asked them which plate they ate out of. Each one of them said the pretty one. Not one person complemented me from the plain pie plate.

Later, I went back into the conference room and expected that the second, plain pie would still be there. I was wrong. Both pies were gone, but I only got complements from the pie in the colorful, beautiful dish. I guess this ultimately answered my question.

What beautiful dish did I use?

Whenever I feel like spurging for a great pie dish, I always gravitate towards the designer Emile Henry. I have been impress by his plates for years. They are substantial and well crafted.

They often remind me of an Ipod- they come in so many colors. Every year there is always a new plate that I absolutly covet- and this year is no exception. Williams-Sonoma carries one of the mosts beautiful plates I have ever seen (and even have a video of how this piece of art was made)
