Budget Pie Supplies

Top 10 Pie Supplies under $10

This is a fun list of my favorite budget pie supplies. If by rare chance you have all of these items, I would certainly call you a pie enthusiast!

1. Pie Plates

Pyrex 9.5-in. Pie Dish : At $6.00, this glass pie plate is practically perfect. Glass is the best material a pie dish can be made from, as it allow for a beautiful golden crust all the way around.

2. Silicone Spatula

They are perfect for everyday use, and the smallest varieties are wonderful for scraping the last remnants of food from small jars. The MIU 12-in. Spatula, Blue is only $6.95 at cooking.com. See more silicone spatulas

3. Pastry Blender

Good Grips, a personal favorite brand, makes a 5-in. Pastry Blender for $7.95. The pastry blender helps quickly incorporate the butter or shortening into the flour without the warmth of your hands melting the butter. Unfortunately, if the butter melts, the pie dough will not be as flaky.

4. Whisk

Finding a great whisk with a great handle is essential, especially if you do not have a stand mixer to do most of the work for you.

The Good Grips Egg Whisk is fitted with a comfortable and ergonomic handle that makes the repetitive action of whisking a little more bearable, and at $7.95 - the price is bearable, too!

5. Pie Gate

This Progressive Pie Gate (available at Amazon.com for $5.49 keeps your pies fresh after you cut them. This unique device works on cakes, casseroles and any other desserts where you fear the edges might dry out.

6. Pie Weights

Mrs. Anderson's 108 Ceramic Pie Weights are ideal for those who like to make their own pie crusts. I find when I have a recipe that requires that the crust bake first- the crust will shrink without the weight of the filling- that is were these little ceramic weights come in! Note: You may need two sets, but at $4.99, we are still under the $10 limit!

7. Pie Bird

When I first started baking, I ran across many pie plates offered with pie birds in the middle. I did not understand this at all. I did some research and found that they are used to prevent the filling from boiling over and bursting your top crust.

As the filling boils- the birds, placed in the pie before the filling, while a hole is cut around the top layer of crust, let off the steam. Now, I prefer the simpleWhite Porcelain Pie Birds because they do not distract from the pie. ($5.99)

8. Bake-in Pie Server

This is, by far, one of the most ingenius budget pie supplies I have ever seen! You bake your pie server into the pie, so when you are ready to cut, it is not a mess and you can start the initial pie right! We all know how hard it is to get an entire pie piece out without turning it into a cobbler! Pie Server - Bake-In at Amazon.com for $5.50

9. Pie Top Cutters

Now, there are two routes that you can take to make pie lattices easier. One is the PIE TOP/PASTRY LATTICE CUTTER (for $7.89) which cuts into a long strip of pastry and you pull it wide over the top of the pie to create the lattice. It works a bit like a paper doll.

Surprisingly, it can actually get easier. This Lattice Pie Top Cutter- White will cut out the lattice when you roll a large circle. It works like a giant cooking cutter, and it is only $3.59.

10. Mixing Bowls with Handle

Finding a great mixing bowl under $10 was a bit of challenge. Budget pie supplies larger than utensils get hard to come by. But, I came out victorious! The Pfaltzgraff 2-pc. Weir in Your Kitchen Bowl and Mini Whisk, Chicory offers a handle and a free whisk large enought to mix in this bowl.

There is also a great three piece glass set by Pyrex for $9.99. Pyrex makes my favorite pie plate, and I know that these bowls are made to last.
