Apple Corers and Peelers

The crank peelers, by far, have come the longest way in to our modern kitchens. These accessories now come with suction cups and elegant workings. My favorite is the VillaWare Chromed Cast Iron Apple Corer ($19.95 at cooking.com). It is substantial enough to last and light enough to work well with little pressure. It is not, however, dishwasher safe, so expect to clean this one by hand.

For those who want something a little more universal And dishwasher ready, it would be best to get the peeler and Corer separately.

The corers come in two basic types, those that core only and those that core and cut the apple for you. Corers by themselves are very inexpensive and Good Grips Apple Corer ($7.95 at cooking.com) makes a great one. They specialize in no slip handles. I own many of their products and have never been disappointed. If you are a Kitchenaid collector, Pflalzgraff.com has KitchenAidŽ Apple Corers available in their classic white, blue, black and red.

They also offer a great corer and slicer- with the same no grip handles. ( Good Grips Apple Divider plastic version $8.95 at cooking.com and a steel version is available at gourmet.com for $11.95). I prefer the steel for just a few dollars more. You can press as hard as you want without cracking the plastic. Both are dishwasher safe.
